2024 Poll Results

New PIF/Innovative Research national poll examines Canadian views on Israel and Palestine, the limits of free speech, and acceptable protest.

  • Most agree it is both important for Israel to exist as a Jewish state and to create a state for Palestinians.
  • Canadians are largely in agreement about what types of speech on Israel/Palestine should be allowed, including speech supporting/opposing either state.
  • Supporters of Israel and the Palestinians respect the speech rights of each other.
  • Canadians overwhelming agree that speech calling for violence against Muslims or Jews , or speech that views each group are a threat to Canadian society, should not be allowed.
  • Almost three-quarters believe that the hate, discrimination and violence experienced by Canadians of different origins due to conflicts or events in their ancestral homelands is a significant problem.
  • Marches in Canadian major cities supporting either Palestinians or Israelis are viewed as an acceptable form of protest, but not road blockades, disruptive campus building occupations, or encampments, even when they do not interfere with educational activities.
